Version4 generative AI policy

First things first: Version4 will never use generative AI on your content without your approval.

How we think about generative AI

Version4 recognizes that generative AI gives authors and content creators access to vast amounts of information that has the potential to exponentially improve the efficiency of creating content. But it also brings increased risks for reputation, security, and content quality. It is also affected by rapidly evolving social, ethical, and legal concerns.

 

Therefore, Version4 believes that if generative AI is used on content, it must be judiciously used as a tool to aid the content creator rather than as the content creator itself.

Our guiding principles

When we do use generative AI at Version4, we abide by three guiding principles.

Put people first

Generative AI cannot replace the unique expertise, perspectives, creativity, and insights that people provide. We will never rely on generative AI to autonomously create, write, or edit content.

 

We use it as a tool to help people spark ideas, identify connections and trends, and complement human insights and creativity.

Generative AI outputs are reviewed by people

Current generative AI models can be susceptible to hallucinations, lack of coherence, lack of context, factual inaccuracies, bias, formulaic writing, and visual errors, making them poorly suited for use without oversight and verification of their outputs.

 

AI-generated content is never trusted to be appropriate and accurate as produced; instead, it is always reviewed by a “human in the loop” to verify, fact-check, revise, and approve any output.

Generative AI use is disclosed

If generative AI has been used to create or substantially alter content, it should be disclosed so that the end user understands the source and the copyright implications (generated content cannot be copyrighted in the US).

In addition to these guiding principles on generative AI use, Version4 recognizes that there is value in creating content the old-fashioned way.

 

Writing and designing are often just as much about the creation and review process as about the end result, meaning that the creative process of writing and designing and then revising is a way to organize ideas, discover new ideas, and understand the subject matter.

 

The art of creating brings value to not just the audience but also the creator.

How we use generative AI

At this point, generative AI is built into many standard office and business tools by default. We may use these to streamline our business processes, such as taking meeting notes, scheduling meetings, organizing emails, or summarizing search results. If you prefer that we not use any generative AI tools when interacting with you, just let us know.

We do not use any generative AI tools on client content unless they have specifically given us approval to do so. With approval, we may use generative AI in the following ways in alignment with our generative AI guiding principles:

  • Identifying hashtags, keywords, or short captions for social media posts.

  • Summarizing metrics or large datasets or reports.

  • Helping determine a structural outline of an existing idea.

  • Providing an overview of existing publications on a subject.

  • Providing suggested corrections on text.

  • Providing layout suggestions for presentation slides.

  • Making minor visual corrections to images or videos.

  • Removing unwanted backgrounds or distracting elements from images or videos.

  • Investigating the provenance of text, including plagiarism and copyright infringement detection.

  • Transcribing interviews or creating captions for video content.

All outputs are always evaluated and then accepted or rejected by a professional editor.
